Oprah Winfrey once said “Do something that you love doing and you’ll never have to work for the rest of your life.”
But the search to finally doing journalism began as a young kid around my family who always knew that I was the person to come to should they want to know of any updates or issues happening with the community or our neighbors.
That journey was derailed as I was offered a job right after finishing high school and because also this vision that everybody had for me, I did not foresee for myself. Years later I realized that I needed to explore this path furthermore this loving of news had not died down .I wanted to be the first to know what was happening.
Since most of these skills can be learned and honed through practice I made my way to Durban University of Technology to help enhance this love for writing.
I chose this path as I wanted to be able to tell stories that not everyone is willing to tell. I am generally passionate about people, society and being an advocate for people who are voiceless.
Being in a taxi and hearing people talking about an issue they heard but not knowing the full facts to that story .
I believe being a journalist is great because it allows you the opportunity to explore current issues of national or international significance in a manner that permits you to develop a deep personal understanding of how industries, economies, companies, the government and key decision-making individuals function.
Being around my community and seeing issues but not having the means to voice them in. This is what then led me taking the journey to the Durban University of Technology and to acquire skills that would help come just a little bit closer to that dream.
Journalism has influenced my life by permitting me to experience the level of access to interesting people and events. It is a job that places you close to decision makers and the decision-making process, which can be a fascinating insight into how your community or country works.
